What is digital marketing?  

What is it? Is it a two worded fancy phrase that makes you cool when you say it on gathering or it really the future of all marketing segment which you really need to know about. I’ll tell you in this post the digital marketing types that you should know.

The term digital marketing gained prominence between 1990 and 2000. But if you think precisely, you will understand that it started with the invention of the radio. How? Because when you promote something digitally from one place to another, it’s called digital marketing.


Digital marketing is the component of marketing that utilizes the internet and online-based digital technologies such as desktop computers, mobile phones, and other digital media and platforms to promote products and services.

Now if you’re doing anything related to online advertising or starting an internet business, it’s kind of useful to know what all of these different weird terms mean. And I’m going to be defining some of these big terms in this post to help educate you. Let’s get it.

Oh, my God, what do all these weird terms mean?  What’s the difference between content marketing and digital marketing, or native advertising and online advertising?

All of these things are like kind of big terms, and they have maybe much nuanced differences. But if you’re going into starting an internet business, it’ll be useful to be able to speak the jargon, to be able to converse with other people who have internet businesses as well.

And also help you figure out what you’re looking forward to you know start your business or take your business to the next level.

Digital marketing is a really big encompassing word.

It’s a job title like the director of digital marketing, or VP of digital marketing and digital marketing encompasses all these other aspects of marketing like content marketing, online advertising, native advertising marketing, automation email marketing, online PR, and affiliate management.

But what do these other terms stand for? Now, if you’re starting an internet business, you may be thinking yourself, why the heck do I need to know or what all these weird terms stand for? But it’s important because, if you don’t know how to speak the jargon or if you don’t know how to speak the language of internet businesses there’s a good chance you won’t be very successful.

If you can’t speak the language you’re not going to do well in the country” – it’s just a fact.

So I’m going to define these different terms based on my research and also my understanding, having worked years and years in Internet businesses. I’ve been running my own internet business full-time since 2016 and I’ve been working in the industry since 2008. Today I’m going to be explaining what everything means here.

Digital marketing, as I said, kind of, is more of an umbrella term, it encompasses a lot of these different aspects of marketing.

What content marketing is?


Content Marketing is a type of marketing that involves the creation and sharing of online material (such as videos, blogs, and social media posts) that does not explicitly promote a brand but is intended to stimulate interest in its products or services.

Basically proliferating your content on YouTube, Instagram, podcasting blogs etc. It’s getting your content out there so it’s really just kind of a top level of the funnel thing. If you think of marketing is, you know a funnel and this is the ways people hear about you.

Content marketing is you know, putting content upon the Instagram, maybe they’re little motivational quotes or on Twitter again motivational quotes or on YouTube maybe little motivational video podcasting, etc this is all content marketing okay, top-level funnel stuff.

What Online Advertising Is?

Now, Online Advertising or you can call Online Marketing. What does it mean?


Online advertising, also known as online marketing, Internet advertising, digital advertising, or web advertising, is a form of marketing and advertising which uses the Internet to deliver promotional marketing messages to consumers.

What is the management of online ads typically on Facebook, Google, and YouTube? Again these are the main platforms for advertising, but you can be advertising anywhere on the internet so it can encompass a lot of other different things. Online advertising can also encompass. This one is where it gets confusing some of these terms aren’t mutually exclusive right.

Now, if you don’t know what any of this means that’s fine. You’re probably new to marketing. Or you just don’t work with native advertising. But if you’ve been working in online advertising and been running internet businesses for a while, it might be useful.

Have advertising. Because it’s a huge way to get new customers. Especially if you have a very broad product that can be marketed on a broad basis.

What Native advertising Is?


Native advertising is a type of advertising that matches the form and function of the platform upon which it appears. In many cases, it functions like an advertorial and manifests as a video, article, or editorial.

The word “native” refers to this coherence of the content with the other media that appear on the platform.

These ads reduce a consumers’ ad recognition by blending the ad into the native content of the platform, using somewhat ambiguous language such as “sponsored” or “branded” content. They can be difficult to properly identify due to their ambiguous nature.

Native advertising is varying from business to consumer. so native advertising is when you’re advertising articles online.

Specifically when you’re advertising articles online using ad networks such as out brain or tabouleh or the other native ad networks plist locker dome,, content ad, Rev content are some of the major native ad networks.

What Marketing Automation Is?

Marketing automation is a kind of a subset of digital marketing. But marketing automation is working with software tools to actually automate all these processes in your own marketing.


Marketing automation refers to software platforms and technologies designed for marketing departments and organizations to more effectively market on multiple channels online (such as email, social media, websites, etc.) and automate repetitive tasks.

And a lot of these things can be job titles and major corporations. You can be the director of marketing automation or marketing automation whatever person. But this is a very important role to understand, this is working with CRM.

CRM such as Infusion soft or Salesforce or philosophy or Zoho, it’s very important to know how to automate a lot of your marketing processes. Many companies running a one-man show.

But do marketing on across so many different platforms like on SMS text message, using call loop, marketing on email. They using Infusion soft, marketing on a rimless voice mail using Stratus IVR, marketing on direct mail using Zen.

So they are doing a lot of different marketing campaigns at the same time. And they need tools to tie them all together and to automate all of these separate processes. But this is a job title, this is a full-time job.

Because there’s you know in complex marketing campaigns and companies that do marketing as their bread and butter. You need to be able to understand how to tie all these systems together. So they work very effectively together so that you can better sell and market. And inform customers about whatever product you have to offer.

What E-mail Marketing Is?


Email marketing is the act of sending a commercial message, typically to a group of people, using email. In its broadest sense, every email sent to a potential or current customer could be considered email marketing.

It involves using email to send advertisements, request business, or solicit sales or donations. Email marketing strategies commonly seek to achieve one or more of three primary objectives, to build loyalty, trust, or brand awareness.

The term usually refers to sending email messages with the purpose of enhancing a merchant’s relationship with current or previous customers, encouraging customer loyalty and repeat business, acquiring new customers or convincing current customers to purchase something immediately, and sharing third-party ads.

Email marketing is simply the writing sequence of different email campaigns. Now for instance in ones’ business, they have an email campaign, which they send for 30days, depending on what the customer does or what the prospect does, they have different emails that they send each person. It’s very important to write their emails accordingly and also to optimize those emails based on open rates, based on click-through rate, based on even deliverability rates. All of these are important within email marketing and for somebody to understand all these aspects. You have to really understand how it works.

What Online PR Is?

Now online PR is an interesting one right, this is a very new term but public relations our publicity that you gather online is increasingly important.


Online Public Relations (E-PR, Digital PR) refers to the use of the internet to communicate with both potential and current customers in the public realm. It functions as the web relationship influence among the cyber citizens and it aims to make desirable comments about an organization, its products, and services, news viewed by its target audiences, and lessen its undesirable comments to a large degree. Online public relations show differences from traditional public relations. One of these is associated with its platforms.

People are more often turning to online news blogs and Facebook pages and Instagram accounts to find out about new products that enter the market then they are turning to magazines or newspapers or TV news stations.

So being able to effectively understand how to reach out to places that have audiences online and get them to run a story on you is very important and it’s actually something that many people are looking for right now as an effective online PR agency. What Affiliate Management Is?

Affiliate management is the last kind of role that falls under digital marketing. An affiliate management is managing the different affiliates that promote your program on a commission-only basis.


Affiliate Management is the process of building and growing a channel of marketers to drive traffic to your store, business or offer. Affiliate programs, networks and managers are the three major components of affiliate management.

Now for a company like Uber, uber has thousands or tens of thousands of different affiliates that market uber to customers.

They need affiliate managers to talk to all the people to get them to inform their audiences of the bonuses or specials or discounts or promotions that they have going on that week or month or year whatever that is. So affiliate management is a very important part of any company’s businesses.


Now overall these are all the roles that kind of fall under digital marketing. It’s a lot of stuff to the stomach. They’re kind of complex terms, but hopefully, this gives you a better understanding of the landscape. So you can be more effective when you go in there to battle to earn those profits. For whatever business it is you run or you work for.
